Vibe coding speeds up development by turning your ideas into AI-generated code with just a few prompts. But don’t make the mistake to count programmers out—without their expertise to review, test, and refine, AI code can quickly become buggy and unreliable. So, programmers aren’t going anywhere yet; they’re the ones who turn this new AI “magic” into reliable software.

So what is Vibe coding really?

Vibe coding is a new way of building software where you describe what you want in plain language, and an AI generates the code for you. So instead of writing every line manually, you guide the AI through iterative prompts—tweaking, testing, and refining the results. It’s like having a coding partner who (hopefully) understands your ideas but still needs your expertise to shape and polish the final product.
In other words, It generally makes software development faster and more accessible by letting developers prototype through natural language and AI assistance, making it easier to be creative and keep going. However, it can lead to unreliable and hard-to-maintain code if used without proper understanding, oversight, testing and validation. Therefore trust in AI-generated code comes from clear human oversight.

So will Vibe Coding Replace Programmers? No, not by far! Not yet…

Anders Hast received a PhD in Computerised Image processing at Uppsala university in 2004. In 2011 he spent one year at IIT, CNR, Pisa in Italy as an ERCIM fellow and after that he received a full time position as associate professor and in 2019 he became professor in image processing, both at Uppsala University.
